this recipe is on the ptr. it is sold by a NPC in the alliance base of SMV. Wildhammer Stronghold. She sells it to both horde and alliance players, the flying guards dont attack horde players so its fairly easy to fly in, hover above her and learn the recipes.

Being a gnome, I encourage all of my kind to purchase themselves some tailor made Blue Overalls, equip their Arclight Spanner and wear their goggles whilst flying around. RP is a good thing, y'know.

I just created mine on the PTR... bad idea, now I'm even more waiting for 2.3 :(

everything is animated on it !
from the reactors to the rotor, including rear parts, toolbox, backpack, motor, hula girl doll, everything moves.

there's two idle animations, one airborne one landed :
airborne : the 'copter's motor stop suddenly and you start falling down with everything shut down, when you reach the bottom of the hitbox motors restart and the thing works again, very nice way of saying "we could have put a fail chance on this too" :D

landed : the machine just lands and shuts down for a while :)

the audio team also worked very hard on it, several different motors and animation sounds are used.

all in all it's a good 200g spent to get it, since I farmed the mats myself.
the hard part is getting to 374 engineering, but takes only a few days with Adamantite Rifles.

edit : on PTR, the horde trainer is an undead near shadowmoon's flying wyvern's stables. And Niobe is not a dark skinned human female :(

Now after checking the item over a bit I can't find anywhere that says u need 300 flying skill, not in game, not at wowhead. There are a reply abit up that says:

"Requires artisan riding skill or higher to use."
Artisan = 300, so you do need it...

As most of the hardcore players know the non-epic version looks like the flying machines located at the air base which is north east of Ironforge. There were dwarves fighting against trolls, I spelled as "were" because we are not able to enter there and see how fight goes on anymore. ^^

I just got the 5000g for the training about 10 mins. ago. Im starting to get the mats for this version of the heli. For the primal fire you can use mote extractor (if you have one) and get 8 primal air. 8 because you need 8 khorium power cores. Then just go to an alchemist and transmute air to fire. Since I wasn´t into proffesions when i was lower lvl, im going to have to buy the rest.

Do you need to train for higher riding to use this mount? It dosn't look like it because all other mounts tell you they need the skill, but this looks like it just needs Eng levels.

To any other balance druid engineers out there who might want to try my riding in flying machines while shifted trick, here's how I did it:

Use your unstable/ultrasafe transporter until you get the "your matrix was mixed with the last person" random horde/alliance debuff.

While in this state, shifting in and out of your still-humanoid forms (moonkin and perhaps tree if memory serves me right) just changes your race instead of dropping the debuff like the beast forms do.

As you are actually a instead of a , the game doesn't stop you from mounting up. The game will, however, drop the debuff after it runs its course regardless of your combined mounted/shifted status.

So ride that machine, boomkin. Ride.

Just got engineering up to the point where I could make one. In all honesty, it didn't take very long. If you farm your mats in Nagrand then it honestly only takes a few hours except for the Khorium which takes forever.

And plus, if you mine every node you come across, you'll have a ton of leftover ore :D

I also want to add that farming for the mats for this got my mining up from 389 to 440.

i think Blizz should take this paint job and add it to the normal Flying Machine. Then they should change the model of the Turbo Flying Machine from the helicopter look, to the new gnomish plane model.
Doing so they would have to make the Flying Machine and the Turbo Flying Machine 2 different mounts, not replacing the normal with the turbo, adding an extra mount to the 50 and 100 mount count (heh cool that rhymed).
Of course then it would make sence to change the recipe so that it doesn't require the normal Flying machine and add some other materials, or change the whole recipe all together.
Personally, i think it would be worth it.
The planes look SOOOOOO cool.

As of 3.1.2, mounts can now swim, as I have not yet gotten to the point where I can purchase/make a flying mount, I am not sure if this works for flying mounts that can travel on ground and air, if it does, I will be a happy flying shaman.

Just had mine crafted a few moments ago.

Wow is this thing still not cheap to craft, with Khorium bars going for well over 45g on my realm it wasn't cheap.
But was it worth it...

BEST MOUNT EVER. It's a helicopter: Awesome, It's turbocharged: Epic, it has a little hula-girl: Rockin'!

AND, it has bloody flame stickers slicking its sides! Travelling in WoW has never been better.
Flying this baby up high, dropping down with parachutes humming the Golden Eye theme has never been better.

Water in the engines can never be a good thing!

Not entirely true. In WW2 planes had a WEP (War Emergency Power) system that quite literally sprayed a water and methanol mix directly into the intake of the engine. The Methanol was strictly to stop the water from freezing a high altitude. It is still used today on most commuter planes during take off.

When you lower the intake charge temperature, you are effectively lowering the required amount of octane rating required to resist detonation. Lower your intake temperature by 50F and thats a free 8 points of octane. That allows you to run higher compression and more advanced timing on the same octane rating fuel.

From a weekend autox racer's perspective, water in the engine is a very good thing. I can run standard 94 octane pump gas and effectively turn that gasoline's effective octane rating to over 106. That allows me to add 11psi extra boost before I approach detonation. 100 free hp from water is a good thing.

Almost not worth the effort or money to create anymore. It's a very minor aesthetic upgrade, and without the difference in speeds anymore, that's the only point. You almost can't even tell the difference between the blue and epic mount from behind, which is what you as the player will be staring at the most. I made this to complete my goblin, but regret it a little.

As of 4.0.6, this mount now has a actual jump animation and land animation when it is used as a ground mount, along with sounds for jumping and landing. The regular Flying Machine however, does not, but it does have the jump and land sounds.

I rerolled engineering on my gnome mage and obviously what engineer wouldnt want the pimp mount that comes with being a top flight engineer.

That being said ALL of the mats are available readily and easily aside from Khorium, this stuff these days is rarer than pyrite, its very hard to mine because your lucky if you get one / 2 spawns per sweep of nodes in any of the maps it spawns in and it is prohibitively expensive on the AH, on my realm - (outland eu) its 2000g for 20 ores on the AH.

It is a bit of a grind to get, especially as its so rare and there isnt any transmute function like we saw in LK and cata, so be warned.

I just thought it was worth mentioning that you don't need to make this if you want to ride your Flying Machine at high speeds. As of Cataclysm, your fly speed depends on your Riding skill only. Save the thousands of gold worth of khorium and felsteel.

Last night my regular flying machine was doing 280%. Found that out by accident.
I can't check if will fly 310% since I'm only 70 and can't buy it yet.

If you plan to make it for it's cool looks, then keep chasing Khorium like I am :)

At the time of this post, the flying machine flight sounds are still bugged. They only sound "idle" instead of that classic chopper noise. And in contrast to what was said above, no, these machines cannot be bought from engineering trainers. You still have to build it, as part of your engineering rite of passage. :D

Want to get this mount( and blue version) in one day? If you are lucky or alone in farming - start off by going to Netherstorm and checking two vendors: Qiff in Area52 and Dealer Najeeb in Stormspire. They can sell ALL(xept for star wood and hula doll) components. Although hard components respawn slower, visiting this couple 1-2 times an hour for 2-3 hours can get you most of blasting powder, all adamantite power cores, fel casings, most of handfuls of FI bolts. If you will run short on Fel Iron - 1-2 circles around Hellfire Peninsula can get you 2-4 stacks in 20 mins. Other than that - I suggest making such a route: circle around Nagrand(has decent ammount of adamantite\khorium)>eastern Zangarmarsh>Eastern Blade's Edge>Area52>Stormspire>Western Blade's Edge>Western Zangarmarsh>circle around Nagrand. With 280% flying speed, guild level 23 and 2-3 hours of such farming you can get all fel iron\adamantite\khorium you need. And most likely, you will have enough procs of Eternium for Felsteel, not to mention leftovers of motes. If Primal Fires(for Power Cores) are expensive - 30 mins in old good Shadowmoon Valley will suffice.

I've found recently that nowadays I can actually submerge my "flying machine" - the propellers extend again when underwater to provide motive power, but the speed is drastically reduced, presumably due to friction...

This is a hybrid version. When you fly still long enough, it brings you bit higher, turns of the engine and you "levitate" for a while. After you get lower, the engine starts again.

This is a feature of "tomorrows" cars, right?

To clarify. As of patch 4.3 you learn the pattern from your normal engineering trainer. You no longer need to go to SMV to get the pattern.

This is still one of my favoritre mounts on my pally engineer.

It can be used as a groud mount. And...it's uses are extra. This is the only mount that I can push forward and see the little items in UC that I need under the green water for the fishing quest. Too lazy to link it ATM...but overall I still love this mount.

Do what you can....farm the Khorium or mine it...this mount still rocks in late Cata...!

what good is this mount being account wide if it requires engineering? lol..

would only another engineer on the same account be able to use it, or because you have an engineer on the account that has the skill to use this, then other non engineer toons on the same account can use it?

(as of the time of typing this, wowhead's info for the item says account wide)

As far as account-wide goes, in order to use this mount your character must indeed have engineering.

An additional requirement is they must simply know how to make the mount. Once you learn the schematic from the trainer (and have flying skill unlocked) you will be able to mount up.

I think they should make a 2-seater Flying Machine. Flying over an area in one and then ejecting the passenger so they glide down in a parachute would look awesome!

Not sure it is been added...But this mount is account bound. So even if you have multiple engineers ,you need to craft a new one to fly it... :(

Unsure if I've just run into a bug but this mount did NOT count toward my mount achieve. I was sitting at 149/150 and I am still sitting at 149/150.
-I've relogged.
-Exited and relaunched.
-Mounted, dismounted multiple times.
EDIT: Some time, about an hour later I finally got credit for this achieve. I didn't notice it until Guppet made me mount the Jade Kite. I scrolled up in chat, no achieve. I did, however, put in a bug report for it in case there was some kind of bug. Who knows. Lesson learned: You might not get the achieve RIGHT away.

This is odd because I am sure my tailoring mounts counted toward the achieve back in WotLK.

Some things I can add:
-It requires 280% (Artisan) training to learn for use.
-Even though it requires 280% to learn you can mount it on engineers with 150% or possibly basic ground training (only tested it on an engineer trained up to 150%. With no Azeroth flight training it was a ground mount.)

I was leveling engineering and noticed that I was not taught this at 375. I have all the mats and I have pulled a Santa Claus and checked my lists TWICE and I don't see it in the trainer list anywhere or in my skills list anywhere. Anyone else notice this or know what is up?

i have an icebound frostbrood, an iron bound protodrake, onyx netherwing drake, onyx cloud serpent and some other fancy dragons, but this is still my favorite mount in the game.

it's got so much personality to it. it's quirky and cool. it's semi-exclusive and very unique. it flies nice and level, not bobbing all over the place. it's nice and compact so it doesn't get hung up on terrain. i went through mining hell to make it back in the burning crusade, when it required a lot more khorium + the regular flying machine, and it was worth every minute.

only mounts i could see taking its place are mimiron's head or maybe the sky golem. we shall see once i make that.

Other than the Phoenix, this is still by far the best mount in the game, in my humble opinion:

1. It's exclusively for engineers, so you don't see too many of them around like you do with other popular mounts.
2. It's unique; some of the rare mounts are based on the same model as others so the only thing "rare" about them is the color. Sure there's the basic model flying machine but only one TURBO-CHARGED Flying Machine.
3. It's practical to use because it's small, maneuverable and affords great visibility for farming. Just wish we could farm without having to "deplane".

It would be nice if Blizzard would create a two seater version of this mount, or perhaps a two seat airplane, with either the front or back seat having access to a machine gun so we could have aerial battles.

That would be awesome!

Just wanted to state, as i thought this confusing;

If you wanted to buy this mount (and add it to your collection) on one character without engineering, then use it on another character with engineering, IT WILL NOT WORK.

You need to have engineering on the character that you bought it on to add it to your other mounts.

At this time, this mount still requires your character to have 375 engineering to be 'used' (learned).
If you purchase this on the AH, or elsewhere, without being a 375 engineer, you cannot 'use' (learn) this mount.

Before you down-rate this comment, please understand Cogwheels also state within their description that 525 engineering is required as well. However, as a non-engineer, you are still able to use the cogwheels (with their bonuses) --as a non-engineer-- within a Ghost Iron Dragonling.

I did not see this mentioned in the other comments, and would like to provide it here, just in case others have used the cogwheels and imagine they can use this mount as well.

*Note: I do not know if learning this mount with another same account 375 engineer will allow a non-engineer character to mount this helicopter. However, checking my non-tailor character, I am not able to use any carpet mounts currently had, receiving the pop-up warning: Requires Tailoring (300).

I don't know if this mount has some kind of bug to it or simply my account not updating immediately like I and maybe some other people would expect but when I used/learned this mount I stayed at 169/200 even after changing characters to a Paladin from Warrior (the class that learned the mount on) and restarting WoW. I got two more mounts not too long after the Flying Machine and my mount progress was updated from 169/200 to 172/200 immediately.
If your mount progress doesn't update immediately you might just have to let some time pass for the game to do its thing when it wants or simply find some other mount to add to your collection.

Here are my findings/insights for those Engineers/Miners farming the mats for this Mount:

I just spent two nights farming enough mats to make two of these. The first time it took me just under three hours and the second time it took just over two and a half hours. So not much in it. They sell for between 17,500-20,000 G on my server, so well worth the time in my opinion.

Without doubt the best place to farm the mats is Nagrand. I set out an, oval shaped, anti-clockwise route which would basically take me to each of the Caves in Nagrand; starting at the Burning blade ruins, then onto the mountain plateau east of the throne of elements to farm the Motes of fire, next west to the laughing skull ruins, the two caves in Warmarhill, returning east and the two caves in Halaal basin and back toward the Burning Blade ruins.

A couple of things to bear in mind. Farming the Khorium is heart-breaking, especially if you get bad RNG, but, you only need 16 ores and I was getting on average 3 ores per node. The real killer is the Eternium, which you need 64 of, I was probably getting one ore per three nodes. Purely on my own experience, during the five plus hours, I NEVER ONCE saw a Khorium node within a cave. They were always outside. In the same vein, Adamantite was always inside the caves.

On each run, I averaged the following left overs; about 250 extra Amantite Ore, 40 primal earth, 100 Fel Iron ore, 120 Netherweave Cloth and 30 Warbeads.

I am not ashamed to admit that I bought a lot of the materials. Farming the mats is a major pain. I want to thank the lovely miners who farm rare minerals and AH them for people like me. I am old and I have RSI, so any help I can get is appreciated. The resulting Turbo-charged flying machine is colorful and nicely detailed: I really love it.

You need Artisan flying to use it. Just in time to be grounded in WoD. ::grumble:: Still, it suits my Goblin engineer very nicely.

I jumped onto my level 38 Gnome engineer, and to my delight she could use it as a ground mount once my Goblin had learned it. BONUS!

Contrary to the tooltip - YOU DO NOT NEED 75 OUTLAND ENGINEERING TO RIDE THIS MOUNT.
You'd need it to learn the mount and add it to your list - but a character can mount it so long as they are an engineer. No points (AT ALL) in Outland Engineering are needed.
