Blizzard released a teaser for a potential upcoming animated project set in Quel'thalas, and here we examine the trailer to determine exactly what it might be about.
The Setting: Quel'thalas
The most obvious piece is the setting, with a very obvious shot of high elves against orcs and trolls in Quel'thalas. What might be less apparent in its quick frames is that the spires of Silvermoon in the background are not their signature red of the modern day, but a distinct blue from their time as high elves. While Silvermoon sported blue spires for most of its existence, it donned its modern colors alongside the shift as a people to be called blood elves, to honor those who had fallen against Arthas and the undead Scourge when he razed the nation to the ground.
The Characters: High Elves
Additionally, you can view the looks of a few characters, some more distinct from others. Most obvious is Lor'themar, who sports his modern outfit as well as
two
blue eyes, indicating again that this takes place before the fall of Quel'thalas at the hands of the Scourge. It was during that invasion that Lor'themar lost his eye, and nearly his life. In the modern day, he and most other blood elves sport not blue eyes, but green and gold ones, reflective of their time using fel magic and the power of the restored Sunwell respectively.
Though not confirmed, the high elven woman in the front is likely Lady Liadrin, the modern Matriarch of the Blood Knights. Prior to becoming the first blood elven paladin, Liadrin was a priestess of Quel'thalas, and adopted daughter to its High Priest. She adventured alongside Lor'themar many times during their days before the fall, as well as alongside Halduron Brightwing, its modern Ranger-General. While also not confirmed, it is possible that one of the elven rangers next to her is Halduron.
The Characters: Orcs and Trolls
Additionally, and rather obviously, the enemy that the elves are facing is not the Scourge or the Void like we would presume to see in our return to Quel'thalas in Midnight, but trolls and orcs. During the Second War, Quel'thalas was one of the primary battlefields in the fight between the Alliance of Lordaeron and the Orcish Horde, and it is there that the orcs allied with the tribe of Forest Trolls known as the Amani.
The conflict between the Amani and the high elves stretches back thousands of years to the original Troll Wars, and the animosity between them even further. Although we associate Quel'thalas with the blood elves and their grand cities in the modern day, the land now known as Eversong was once held by the Amani trolls as a sacred burial ground, and when high elven settlers came from across the sea and desecrated their sacred lands with settlements, the resulting conflict became a feud lasting beyond lifetimes even for the long-lived high elves.
We also see a shot of catapults being fired, which again indicates that this upcoming animated project takes place during the Second War. One of the main acts the Orcish Horde committed against the high elves during their assault of Quel'thalas was burning down swathes of their forests. Not only did they do this with siege weaponry, but they accomplished this task with the aid of red dragons as well. Though the Alliance of Lordaeron would not learn it until much later, these red dragons were enslaved by the orcs thanks to the subjugation of their Dragon Queen, Alexstrasza. She would later be freed from their captivity, but at the time of the Second War, the orcs' command over dragonfire offered them a significant advantage.
The Windrunner Sisters
The final shot is perhaps the most revealing, but only upon close inspection of the frames. The two shadowed elven women we see might look like simple rangers, but they are in truth two of the Windrunner sisters, The first is rather obviously Alleria, sporting her classic high elven garb from prior to The War Within with the addition of a corset. She also wields the bow Thas'dorah, an ancient relic of the Windrunner family that has passed down since the Troll Wars in the hands of the current Ranger-General, a line of succession and ownership unbroken until Alleria.
The other elf is perhaps even more notable, but not in this form. Sylvanas Windrunner is most known as the undead Queen of the Forsaken, but we see her here not as a banshee and instead in her once-living form. The outfit she bears matches with the new look she gained during Shadowlands, where we saw a fragment of her soul still retaining its high elven appearance.
Flashbacks or Full Series?
All the evidence stacks up to this being some kind of project centering on the Second War. It may simply be a flashback to explain Alleria's crucial backstory, and tell other stories in the modern day alongside it. Alleria lost both of her parents as well as her brother during the Second War, and that loss defined the vengeance that eventually led her to pursue them into Outland and become lost for thousands of years in the Twisting Nether, where she would embrace the Void. Showing that in a series of quick flashbacks would work nicely to inform new and returning players of that crucial piece of backstory.
It could, however, also be a longer series than that. Quel'thalas is relevant for much more than Alleria's backstory in the Worldsoul Saga, being our main setpiece for the upcoming expansion Midnight. A much longer series recapping the entire history of Quel'thalas and its important figures would do well to set the stage for the next expansion after The War Within, and offer a final glimpse into the familiar elven lands we know before their revamped states.
Either way, this is a distinctly new style from the typical 2.5D animated shorts that we get, and whatever it ends up being is sure to have the playerbase asking for even more down the road.
