To an extent, I have always been a social person. When given the option, I prefer to be hanging out with friends as opposed to doing something alone. I discovered video games before I turned 10 years old during a social gathering where some friends of mine were playing Super Mario Brothers on the
NES
. I was instantly enamored by the concept of electronic gaming and that fascination has carried on into my adult years. The social aspect of gaming has remained important, even to this day. Sure, I play a video game by myself every once in a while, but I have way more fun when I am competing with or against friends, or even when we're simply watching one another play a game.
World of Warcraft is no exception. Sure, part of my motivation is character advancement, but in the end, the only reason I have played for so long is the fact that I have fun playing with the friends I brought into the game and the friends I met because of the game. They are what make the game truly fun for me. This is evident given my
approach to guilds
. I have trouble integrating into guilds consisting of complete strangers because most of them are concerned about character advancement. It gets to the point where, in some guilds, if you aren't there to help advance the characters in the guild, you're not apt to get much in the way of help or social interaction from them. When I have decided to give the whole guild advancement thing an attempt, I end up feeling like it's more of a job than anything else. I go home from work, log in to WoW, raid until later than I'd like, sleep less than I should, then wake up feeling tired. When a game starts feeling like a second job to me, I stop wanting to play and end up taking breaks from the game spanning several months.
The end result is that I am a casual player. I look forward to the new expansion simply because it seems to accommodate casual players more than previous releases. I know enough people who play the game that I'll finally get to experience end-game content (in the form of
10-man casual raids
) rather than having to participate in a 25-man raid several times a week to experience the content. Of course, I'm also aware of the commentary about the expansion related to the fact that it seems to accommodate casual gamers too much. Several
hardcore guilds
blazed through the end-game content within the first week of launch and are now left grinding the same old instances for slightly better drops.
What about you?
Are you a casual gamer, or do you play the game regularly? Are you excited about the fact that end-game content can be 10-manned, or does that annoy you? What is your overall impression of how the game accommodates casual players versus regular players?
