Blizzard Interview with Gamespot
Warbands Discussion
With a system like Warbands, World of Warcraft is becoming a simpler and more flexible experience for players who have multiple characters across their Blizzard.net account. The Dragonflight expansion flourished the idea to make systems more evergreen for players.
Peter Hodge, via Gamespot said:
"I think there really was a genuine desire to keep pushing," Hodge said. "Dragonflight had a lot of really great improvements to evergreen systems and a lot of quality-of-life things…We wanted to continue that philosophy. What else is there in World of Warcraft that is due for a fresh look? We certainly get feedback all the time that those quality-of-life things around making playing alts easier or access to account-wide features, definitely very high on the list… It feels about the right time to bring a lot of those ideas under one umbrella of a feature."
Many of the systems that govern the way players play World of Warcraft have been around for over
20 years
! In other words, these systems are complex and to create fundamental changes to these systems can be difficult from an engineering perspective. However, this does not deter the developers over at Blizzard from finding ways to further improve the quality-of-life surrounding World of Warcraft!
Hero Talents Discussion
Dragonflight revamped the way Talent Trees worked, and it was a well-received by a great majority of the player base. So when it comes to Hero Talents, finding a way to further expand these new Talent Trees from Dragonflight without introducing too much complexity was the framework Blizzard used when shaping Hero Talent trees.
George Velev, via Gamespot said:
"Though each Hero Talent tree does feature some choice nodes where players pick between two abilities, the fact that each Talent tree is largely the same across all players of that spec makes each easier to fine-tune and balance,"
Another defining framework for Hero Talents came down to class fantasy, and pulling from the existing lore of World of Warcraft to make choices that players across the board would find interesting to see.
George Velev, via Gamespot said:
"But we also didn't completely remove stuff that felt too faction-specific from the table entirely because at the end of the day, Dark Ranger Hunter is super cool. Yes, it's a little bit Horde-oriented but just because it's Horde-oriented doesn't mean we should give up on that approach or that direction."
The Future of World of Warcraft Systems
World of Warcraft has been through many turning points throughout its life, and the way players interact and play the game are always changing. With systems like Warbands and Hero Talents, it looks as though Blizzard is paying close attention to how players consume World of Warcraft. The approaches Blizzard is taking today will create long-lasting changes to the way the game is played, but it's clear Blizzard is ready to adapt if it means an overall more enjoyable experience to World of Warcraft players.
