Recent builds of The War Within Alpha added new item icons with names, potentially suggesting new raid locations tied to Goblins and Ethereals in future patches.
Goblin Raid Icons
inv_offhand_1h_goblinraid_d_01
Added in one of the earliest alpha builds for
The War Within
, this icon with the name 'inv_offhand_1h_goblinraid_d_01' certainly has a conspicuous name, but it is not the only thing indicating a potential goblin raid in the expansion's future patch stories. Joining our adventures in Khaz Algar is the Trade Prince of the Bilgewater Cartel, Monte Gazlowe. Off the back of his
recent short story
, Gazlowe joins us in the depths of the Nerubian kingdom of Azj-Kahet, where he not only helps us save our lost allies, but
encounters a group of Venture Co. goblins who make mention of Undermine.
Undermine, for those not aware, is the underground capitol of all goblins, situated deep underneath their starting zone of Kezan. Although never seen in game, it has been mentioned periodically since Vanilla in various quests and item descriptions. It has little explicit description in canon, but its lore in the Warcraft RPG describes it as the center of all of goblinkind's trade empire, and a hub in which the Trade Princes of their cartels control their wealth and power.

While not pertaining directly to mention of a raid, other icons on the alpha may also indicate potential future storylines, with the Venture Co.'s presence resulting in a few instances where we come to blows with them. Among the loot we obtain from them are various goblin-themed icons, one of which has a rather notable top hat as its sigil. Such an icon has previously never been associated with the Venture Co., but rather notoriously associated with the Bilgewater's former trade prince, Jastor Gallywix. Gallywix was recently mentioned in Gazlowe's short story as well, where he is treated as one of the prominent reasons for the distrust most of the world feels towards goblins and their practices.
Perhaps these icons serve as a hint that he's taken control of the Venture Co. in the wake of our deposing of its leader at his behest in
Battle for Azeroth
, and that the former goblin leader will serve as a major character in future patch stories. In an expansion delving into the depths of Azeroth, there is no time more fitting to explore the subterranean capitol of the goblins than now.
Ethereal Raid Icons

Additional colors of the Ethereal Raid Icons
Of similar note are two icons named 'inv_etherealraid_communicator' and 'inv_etherealraid_chime' respectively, and coming in four colors each to coordinate to raid difficulties. There are two possible explanations for these icons, one quite grandiose and one quite simple.
The grandiose explanation is that, like with the goblin icons and past teases such as the
Emerald Dream zone leaking via a weapon icon
, these ethereal icons hint at a raid in one of
The War Within
's patches. We've been given a tease of ethereal content already, with the Shadowguard from Argus coming under the control of Xal'atath and wreaking havoc in locations such as Ulduar and Telogrus Rift during the Dark Heart patch, as well as the reappearance of Locus-Walker in the same patch.
In Dark Heart, Locus-Walker not only acts as a prominent character in story cutscenes there, but serves as a key contributor to the drive to fight Xal'atath going forward with his reveal that the Ethereal homeworld of K'aresh experienced similar voices coming from their world before its destruction at the hands of Xal'atath and her master, the Void Lord Dimensius. It would not be out of left field if our fight against Xal'atath takes us to the ruins of the Ethereal homeworld in an effort to figure out how to combat her, and it is likely a matter of when we will visit K'aresh during the Worldsoul Saga, rather than if.
The simpler explanation is one that likely bears more fruit for the moment, however. Among the nerubian enemies we will fight in the expansion's first raid, Nerub'ar Palace, there is one rather conspicious boss by the name of
. Her story is that ethereal infiltrating the close council of the nerubian's Queen An'surek, potentially for the sake of assassinating her. For one reason or another, we fight her off, and among her regular loot table are a few unique items.
One of which is a unique fist weapon resembling the void blades Ky'veza wields,
, and the other two are Ethereal-themed trinkets,
and
. The concepts of these trinkets align perfectly with the visuals we see in these two raid icons, as a communicator and summoning theme respectively. It may end up that, unlike previous icons, these ones are merely oddly named icons meant for the trinkets to drop from this specific Ethereal boss in our upcoming raid.
Either way, we've certainly been teased quite a bit of late about Ethereals and their relationship to the ongoing void threat in the Worldsoul Saga, and even if we do not end up seeing their homeworld in
The War Within
, it would be wise to expect their presence to increase as we delve into the expansion's patch stories and eventually head into
Midnight
to combat the threat head-on.
