Outlaw Rogue Dragonflight Class Tree
Outlaw Rogue Dragonflight Talents - What's New?
With the launch of Dragonflight just over the horizon, talent trees are the biggest talking point of the expansion. For good reason as this has been a long awaited change that adds a lot of additional depth into the game when it comes to optimizing your character for the content in front of them. Say goodbye to the old way to talents where every 10-15 levels, you can put 1 talent in a row of 3 choices, sometimes not even being a DPS gain. The new and improved talents are now a talent tree that is now split into 2 different trees, one for your class, and the other for your spec. Every level you will gain 1 point for 1 of the trees, and then alternates every other level to the other tree. These trees have a lot of things to pick apart so let's get right into it.
While many other classes are enjoying enjoying the added crossover of skills, like healers gaining access to kick, Rogue has had a lot of crossover design wise over the years which leaves only a few super standout additions to Outlaw specifically. One somewhat noteworthy one is
Schattenschritt
, while this seems like a side grade to the already incredibly useful
Greifhaken
, actually can be a huge deal breaker on some raid encounter. For example Outlaw Rogues on early progression for
Leidensschmied Raznal
was nearly impossible because
Greifhaken
is a "leap effect" meanwhile
Schattenschritt
is a "blink effect". Very minor overall but can be a deal breaker for certain encounters.
Schattentanz
is the real powerhouse talent that the class tree gives Outlaw. Not only does this talent have great synergy with all the
Hinterhalt
related talents that I will cover later, but this is talent requires you to path through
Schwäche finden
which is massive for Outlaw. All of Outlaws damage other than trinkets, and potentially
Widerhallender Tadel
if you chose to talent it, is physical which just means that this is a massive damage increase overall. To allude to something I'll talk more in depth later, this talent needs to be reworked in some capacity due to conflicting Outlaw mechanics which make the playstyle real ugly, but also does a lot of damage.
Outlaw Rogue Dragonflight Talent Tree - First Impressions
My first impressions when seeing the tree for the first time was "Wow, how did they make the Outlaw tree so good" and then they changed it, and made it even better. The main things that were changed from previous builds is more connecting nodes in the Rogue side of the tree to easier access other utility options. The Outlaw tree had a lot of work done to it, talents got shuffled around, they adding choice talents, and also added more conencting nodes to make it easier to make builds that aren't as focused on one specific playstyle.
One thing that personally stands out to me as a big win for this talent tree are the energy, and combo point increasing talents. Energy talents have always been an important balance to strike when it comes to all Rogue specs as you don't need to take every single one. Even just based on your gear and current haste levels on your character could drastically change the values of any of these energy/cp talents. There are loads of options on both sides of the tree, on the class tree specifically the valuable ones appear to be;
Sparfuchs
which just makes finishing moves cheaper,
Verbesserter Hinterhalt
which makes
Hinterhalt
generate additional combo points,
Lebenskraft
which gives +50 base energy and 10% increase energy regeneration rate, and potentially even
Schicksal besiegeln
which causes generators to generate more combo points. It's hard to say without a robust sim structure to say how many of these are going to be required at max gear levels, but the fact that you can opt in and out of these to grab potentially more damage talents is fantastic.
View on Dragonflight Talent Tree
For this talent tree, I left a few talent points open due to being unsure if the last few points should go towards
Lebenskraft
or
Sparfuchs
for more manageable energy, or
Widerhallender Tadel
for just raw damage. So allow me to go into detail on some of the key factors in this tree, because it might look a little strange to some.
The first thing that looks probably out of place is only 1 point into
Inbrunst
. So because of the fact that
Inbrunst
on talent rank up increase the "chance to gain an
Inbrunst
stack" rather than increasing the haste increase what this means is that with basic probability and the speed in which Outlaw generates and spends combo points, you actually only need 1 point in this to keep it at 100% uptime on average. Obviously there is a chance that this will drop but again, on average this will be kept with 100% uptime on any raid encounter. This talent should realistically be changed for two reasons; for one, due to not actually needing ranks 2 and 3 to make sure you keep uptime on the stacks of
Inbrunst
, talenting into them is basically a waste of a talent point. Number two is having spend 2 total talent points to be able to get
Meisterlicher Stratege
which a lot of builds potentially would want, are realistically not going to spend the points to get there. A simple change is just make it so ranks of
Inbrunst
increase the haste provided, rather than the chance to gain.
The big focus on this tree overall though is
Schattentanz
, this is just a insane addition to Outlaw, especially with how strong the Outlaw tree looks with all its synergies.
Tödlichkeit
is a huge damage increase with the focus of this build being generators which
Hinterhalt
happens to be. Now let's talk about the big issue in the room
Schwäche finden
. While this talent seems innocent it has some real ugly playstyles with Outlaw specifically. Due to the fact that
Klingenwirbel
damage on both the target you are hitting, and the target you are flurrying your damage onto can gain benefits from
Schwäche finden
this leads to the most efficient way to actually play this spec DPS wise is going to be getting a mouseover macro for
Hinterhalt
and effectively playing as if you were a Assassination Rogue applying
Blutung
to all targets in range. Another issue is that because
Zwischen die Augen
is a debuff applied to your target it makes tab targeting incredibly ineffective for this sort of strategy, it has to be a mouseover macro. Overall I don't think anybody wants to play Outlaw Rogue like a multidot spec which is effectively what kind of gameplay
Schwäche finden
asks for in cleave content.
Outlaw Rogue Spec Tree
Outlaw Rogue Talents for Raiding - What's New?
The tree features mostly new ideas for the spec, with a few returning effects from previous expansions.
Ass im Ärmel
- While this talent seems very exciting to those who remember how powerful this old Azerite Trait was, it's missing the most important part of the old version. The important part of this azerite trait was never the "reload" effect, but was because it caused your
Zwischen die Augen
to deal increased damage. The actually "reload" effect is actually quite low impact so I'm going to say that this talent is equally low impact.
Pfeilschneller Schlitzer
- Pretty generic good talent. Attack speed leads to increased
Tödlicher Nachschlag
which means more energy. In addition melee hits are a huge part of Outlaws damage so this talent is just great overall, even if a bit boring.
Schlagkräftig
- This talent effectively turns your
Hinterhalt
into a mini version of
Widerhallender Tadel
which might sound cool on paper, I don't think really works with how
Schattentanz
wants you to play. Due to the fact that your rotation becomes very strict within the
Schattentanz
burst windows, you don't really have a lot of time to react and respond to the combo point that you get from it meaning you are going to overlap a lot of these procs and they will go to waste. I love the integration of the
Widerhallender Tadel
effect into the core of the spec, but I don't think this is the place to put it.
Unverfroren
- This is a really cute talent that has a lot of nice synergy with a lot stuff in the tree. This has synergy with
Aus der Hüfte
causing you to generate additional
Gelegenheit
procs at once. This has obvious synergy with
Geworfenes Reizmittel
making it proc more often. This talent likely gets skipped for the full
Schattentanz
builds but for builds focusing on the right side of the tree this can be great to get additional
Chancenberechnung
procs.
Überrumpeln
- Very powerful talent for
Schattentanz
focused builds. It's just a huge amount of stats for basically no cost, not much else to say.
Unerkannte Gelegenheit
- The biggest, and most impactful part of this talent is making it so
Hinterhalt
now can proc
Gelegenheit
which can potentially help a large amount with energy related issues that might come up with spamming such an expensive builder in such a short window.
Ruhlose Bande
- This is an extremely controversial talent, this turns Outlaw Rogue to a CDR battery which is almost like a
Faewächter
effect which can apply to the entire party. This can easily be extremely powerful with making raid comps with 4 strong classes with such an effect and using this talent to fuel them to potentially very strong levels. Something to note is that concept was theorized during Shadowlands alpha with
Faewächter
but never got to the degenerate levels that people were theorizing, so I also wouldn't be surprised if it never happens here either but it's something to pay attention to for sure.
Talentierte Tötung
- Another simple yet effective talent. Effectively reads "
Tötung
does more damage, and costs less energy." Very important for any build focusing on finishers.
Großer Wurf
- This is a very strange talent that I can see being deceptively powerful. While a 5 minute cooldown sounds like an infinite duration of time but it is on
Ruhlose Klingen
so it's closer to a 2~ minute cooldown give or take. This also does work
Chancenberechnung
buffs so the use case is to use
Schattentanz
, generate a bunch of
Chancenberechnung
buffs from this, and then have 3-5 buffs rolling and then cast
Großer Wurf
to get a huge duration on a large amount of buffs. Very slept on talent overall.
Sepsis
- While most people seem to have an issue with this talent, due to Night Fae being never the best option through all of Shadowlands. There are 2 big changes that make this much more appealing with a new Dragonflight talent tree, the main thing is it being added to
Ruhlose Klingen
, the other huge part is the free cast of
Hinterhalt
which has loads of synergy on the tree. So it's a spell with a short cooldown, does lots of damage, and has synergy with the tree, honestly a personal favourite of mine if I'm being honest.
Präzise Stiche
- I love this talent honestly, I think it's a really unique way to incorperate the target cap into the specs core identity. Seems strong for any cleave related content, specifically those unter the target cap of course. This also has synergy with the talent above it,
Tanzender Stahl
which increases the target cap by 3 meaning its even easier to get the big
Präzise Stiche
damage increase to be active.
Aus der Hüfte
- Incredible talent for overall energy efficiency.
Gelegenheit
procs are already huge for energy efficiency and generating 3x as many any time you get a proc is going to cause you to skip out on so many energy related talents because this talent covers most of your issues. One small issue with this talent is the overall low duration, which was just increased last alpha patch actually but probably needs to get increased a bit more. Due to the fact that it allows you to store up to 6
Gelegenheit
at once you are less incentivised to spend them as soon as you get them, but due to the fact that the duration for the buff is so short, you kind of have to quickly weave them in as quick as possible before losing potentially 2 or more procs at once. Maybe every time you cast
Pistolenschuss
it refreshes the duration of the stacks?
So yeah this tree is massive when it comes to new ideas to the spec so it's almost like going in blind when it comes to trying to figure out what looks optimal. The 3 standout directions that the tree seems to be guiding players towards is an
Hinterhalt
focused build potentially using
Aus der Hüfte
and
Unverfroren
with less of a focus on
Schattentanz
, or you can just go all in on
Schattentanz
and go for more energy efficiency in talents like
Talentierte Tötung
to maximize damage in the burst window. The 2nd is a large focus on finishers and
Schicksalswürfel
to use things like
Chancenberechnung
, and
Gezinkte Würfel
to stack up on lots of buffs and extending a 5 buff to a large duration using
Großer Wurf
. The last is a focus on gun abilities, using the earlier mentioned
Aus der Hüfte
, and
Pistolenheld
to generate lots of combo points and spend them on
Zwischen die Augen
to get
Grünhauts Ruten
to deal big damage with
Pistolenschuss
.
Outlaw Rogue Dragonflight Talent Tree - First Impressions
First impressions I want to focus on are the gameplay focused issues I see happening with the new talent tree. I have identified a few that lead to some less than desirable gameplay.
Schlagkräftig
- Due to clashing playstyles with
Schattentanz
Schwäche finden
- With the way the talent currently function, this just turns Outlaw into an Assassination Rogue in cleave content, which just doesn't sound fun to me.
Talentierte Tötung
- While incredibly strong, are a bit boring and could use some spicing up just to make the tree a little more standout.
When compared to other talent trees that I've seen, there is a lack of being able to rebuild your tree in a way that functions similar to how it plays in Shadowlands which makes it hard to evaluate numbers exactly without sims being finished. Although sims aren't finished there are some talents that I can easily identify as weak and should be buffed moving forward.
Ass im Ärmel
- As mentioned earlier, the effect of getting a refund of combo points whenever you cast
Zwischen die Augen
is incredibly low impact, it gives you only around 8-12 combo points in a 5 minute fight, borderline irrelevant, the % chance should be much higher.
Schallende Klarheit
- This is on the rogue side of the tree, but this talent probably shouldn't be a 2 rank point, this should just be a 1 rank that highlights all 4 combo points, this will make it a much more appealing talent to go overall.
Disteltee
- This is also on the Rogue side of the tree, but this effect just sucks. It's a cute callback to classic, but the game has gotten much more in depth where +100 energy isn't going to cut it as a talent. I'm unsure what bonus effect could be added to this, maybe a % decrease to energy cost of all skills for x seconds after consuming to potentially push it as an all in energy talent.
Beidhändigkeit
&
Verbesserte Main Gauche
- Anybody who has played Outlaw for a decent amount of time is aware that Mastery sucks, neither of these talents make Mastery a more appealing stat. Just make these numbers larger, and maybe fix some of the bugs related to Mastery and these talents will be more sought after.
Example Builds
There are 2 main ideas that I have when it comes to building out the trees for Outlaw, one that is focused on
Schattentanz
primarily for single target, and one for cleave content featuring lots of the gun related talents.
View on Dragonflight Talent Tree
This tree overall focuses on rushing down to grab some of the key components of a
Schattentanz
build which include
Großer Wurf
,
Chancenberechnung
and
Überrumpeln
. Due to the nature of Outlaw being an incredibly snowballing spec, any increase to combo point generation can quickly cause the spec to get out of control. Being able effectively give yourself a 5+ buff is incredibly powerful. Having 5+ buffs means you are generating an absurd amount of combo points, which means you get boat loads of CDR from
Ruhlose Klingen
meaning you get to use
Großer Wurf
more frequently which means more 5+ buffs.
View on Dragonflight Talent Tree
This tree is more focused on cleave based content by picking up all the
Klingenwirbel
related talents, while also grabbing some other notable talents such as
Die Schreckensklingen
which has now been added to
Ruhlose Klingen
which similar to above, causes a very powerful snowballing effect to the spec. Other noteworthy talents include
Unverfroren
for synergy with
Aus der Hüfte
which also happens to work great with
Die Schreckensklingen
since otherwise we would run into energy issues maximizing globals in its damage window. While I'm personally unsure if this build would go
Schattentanz
still, you could swap out some of the class talents for things on the left side of the tree, such as
Schicksal besiegeln
to help get you back to those
Ruhlose Klingen
windows as quickly as possible.
Final Thoughts on the Outlaw Rogue Talent Trees
Overall, this tree is fantastic and I see it as a direct improvement to the currently existing talent trees. I have very few issues overall, some minor tuning issues, a few potentially boring talents that could use sprucing up, and fixing up a few ones that lead to awkward gameplay and it's golden. Due to the fact that there are a lot of powerful talents that focus both on
Klingenwirbel
and just general single target spells, it's going to be very easy to tailor your Outlaw Rogue to excel in the content you chose to engage with. I am also especially eager to see how this talent tree interacts with tier sets later down the line!
