Arme sacrée and Rempart sacré are no longer ground-targeted spells. You cast them directly on yourself or another player.

There is a talent, Solidarité, that will automatically cast Arme sacrée or Rempart sacré on a group member when you cast it on yourself. There is a built-in priority order for each based on role. For Rempart sacré, the role priority when self-casting is Tank > Healer > DPS. For Arme sacrée, it will go on the closest DPS first then on Tanks then Healers.

The damage of Arme sacrée scales completely based on the Paladin who casts it. The amount of damage, the haste scaling, critical strike chance, etc. are all calculated based on the stats of the Paladin who cast it. The target has nothing to do with any of this. It's not an external like Infusion de puissance.

Arme sacrée has an RPPM of 8. This is the total number of procs that includes both damage and healing.

In logs and add-ons like Details, all damage of Arme sacrée will be attributed to the casting Paladin. The player who receives the buff will not have a listing in their damage breakdown.

The only thing that matters with Arme sacrée is that the target maximizes their actions per minute to saturate the proc chance. The only thing you don't want is to cast it on someone who is AFK.

Class Fantasy & Visuals: Templar (Winner)

Here are some visual examples that show how cool Templar looks! It's a two-part animation. The first part puts golden wings on your back and you swing a giant hammer. The second part is the animation of nearby enemies being hit. When you press Marteau de la Lumière and see the whole animation, combined with the sound effects, it feels like this big power moment in your rotation where you did something awesome.

Lightsmith on the other hand doesn't have a real animation. It just has a slight visual flourish but it's hardly noticeable. Here is the flourish for Rempart sacré.

Fun & Rewarding Gameplay: Templar (Winner)

Templar adds an interesting new way to juggle Holy Power and your defensive buttons. It's a nice change of pace from previous expansions and shakes up the gameplay when it comes to managing Holy Power and Bouclier du vertueux uptime. It's also rewarding to keep up Cieux ébranlés as much as possible. Templar rewards you for playing well.

Lightsmith falls short because it's just Dragonflight Protection Paladin with an extra key bind. No new interactions or gameplay loops are created and that just makes it boring.

Difficulty: Lightsmith (Winner)

Lightsmith is a bit easier to learn and play since you focus on maintaining Bouclier du vertueux and Consécration without the Cieux ébranlés mini-game that Templar brings along with it.

Defensiveness & Utility: Lightsmith (Winner)

Lightsmith allows you to utilize all defensive cooldowns while Templar does not. Templar requires that you commit Œil de Tyr as part of your rotation, which makes Lightsmith way more flexible defensively.

Leveling: Templar (Winner)
Templar will do more burst damage in a big outdoor world pull that will make leveling go faster by shortening combat times when doing quests or outdoor content. Templar also brings with it Charge incessante that makes getting around the open world much easier.

Mythic+: Lightsmith (Winner)

Lightsmith is better for Mythic+ because Templar as it stands is not compatible with how Protection Paladin needs to play in Mythic+. I'll get more into this when I discuss hero tree feedback.

Raid: Templar & Lightsmith (Tie)

This will come down to tuning. Protection Paladin will focus on two things for raids in The War Within: damage and externals like Bénédiction de protection des sorts. Since Bénédiction de protection des sorts is not hero tree specific, it will come down to damage tuning of both trees. Odds are that Protection Paladin will play the one that does the most damage and we'll know which is better once tuning is more settled closer to the raid release in September.

Best Overall: Lightsmith (Winner)

Lightsmith is the better overall hero tree. It's better for Mythic+ and could be a competitive raid option. Until Templar's Mythic+ weaknesses are resolved then It's more likely that Lightsmith will be a "set and forget" option for most people.

Bouclier du vengeur Templar in Mythic+

You need to give up a defensive, Œil de Tyr, to make the rotation work.

To play optimally, you have to overlap Œil de Tyr and Marteau de la Lumière with Courroux vengeur (and that means Sentinelle) to get the most out of it.

Talents like Vocation supérieure discourage using Bouclier du vengeur, which is critical for AoE damage and interrupts.

Bouclier du vengeur was decoupled from the Holy Power system

Early Paladin class tree designs had Bénédiction de protection des sorts available to Retribution and Holy

Templar Marteau de la Lumière always costs 3 Holy Power, even with consuming Délivrance de la Lumière or Dessein divin procs

Templar Cieux ébranlés doesn't extend it's duration by 8s when using Marteau de la Lumière - This also affects Retribution!

Lightsmith Conseil divin prefers to heal up to 5 injured targets and sometimes does no damage at all as a result

Templar Œil de Tyr doesn't benefit from Sceau de l’Ordre's 10% cooldown reduction

Templar Marteau de la Lumière doesn't benefit from Dessein divin's damage bonus but still consumes the buff.
