I have expierienced this phenomenon myself, as I have just started playing WoW scarcely a month ago because I wanted to experience the new content. I wasn't this psyched about TBC so I didn't buy WoW that time around. The thing is though, in my opinion, that they really took a huge step from vanilla and TBC to Wrath. The setting is right, the antagonist a big figure in Warcraft lore, and which I think is often overlooked, TBC has produced a good community that has proven to be devoted to the game. Something else I observed is that a lot of kids and teenagers (14 - 17 years of age at the time of vanilla and TBC) that always wanted to play WoW but couldn't (not enough money/parents) now can, and so I've seen a lot of them go ahead and buy it this time around.

People change -- it's expected. I have friends that played WoW with me, but as they grew older, their likes, and dislikes changed. I currently don't have any friends that play, and I like that -- I enjoy soloing. I'm sure that'll change, though.
It's been quite the opposite for me actually.I got BC on a school night at 1 in the morning, played until I had to go to school. I've been in and out of WoW since then, no doubt I've been playing the game for over 4 years now, but I'm just not interested in getting WotLK yet.I got really bored with the 70 content, I was in the beta and the leveling is just the same as it was.Personally I've always been horde and I've never leveled an ally, so without excitement for leveling my four 70s, I started and ally and I've been leveling her. She's 33 now and I plan to take her all the way.So it'll be another few weeks until I need WotLK, I wasn't at all ecstatic that it was coming out.Dunno. =/I think the game has changed for the worse since the release of BC. It's not worth all of the time now, for me.
Queues have died down. Could be that it is no longer the weekend, but I'm glad I don't have to wait for two hours while 1500 people log off. :/It's cool that people came back to the game, though. There really is a lot of amazing stuff to experience. And we have plenty of time to get through it. ;)Incidentally, in TBC I zerged to 70 in a week, had my epic flying mount a week later and managed to gather enough heroic gear to start on Karazhan within a month of its release. This time around, I am really enjoying the content; stopping to smell the roses and maybe even prune them here and there. My mage is only level 71 and I am in no real hurry to get to 72, let alone level 80. I want to take my time and just... breathe it all in, one sub-zone at a time. :)
for me wrath is where all the warcraft lore comes together. I'm not sure how many original wc1,2,3 players there are in WoW but those that are will have noticed some hopps-skipps-and jumps between in game lore of WoW and the cinimatics of the warcraft series. For me, wrath has this amazing ability to actually cause me to want to quest to level..... ive gone from 1-70 mostly though instance grinding and some quests here but never to the extent that wrath is drawing me in. Now i'm still not gung-ho about doing all the quests, i left the Fijord at 49/109 according to the achievement tracker but the questing I have done was just as enjoyable as the first day I picked up the game. I'm excited about the possibility of flying a frostwrym around northrend..... the one unit in wc3 that could turn a game upside down... like the carriers of starcraft it just brought the whole.... oh man this is going to be rough feeling.with all the lore being exhausted from the wc123 series i look forward to the direction blizzard is going to take in the next expansion ... because if theres something we know about blizzard is that it just keeps on going... i mean really, who would have thought there would have been a sc2 back in the day.... or that thrall was going to break out of prison camp in wc2 and start the wc3 saga that we are all so familiar with? whatever happens im sure it will be epic.
Everyone i have ever known that plays the game as simply always played it, i guess after awhile the game just kind of becomes a part of your life and daily routine. I would have to agree with what people are saying about how everyone is coming back to play sence WotLK, it's a big part of Warcraft lore and people want to see how it plays out. Not to mention the new DeathKnight class, i have friends who bought the expansion for that alone. As for the Queue's i have never in the 3 years that i have been playing had to deal with one. Blizzard doesnt just give out those free charecter transfers for nothing you know, if you dont like the Queue to play then move to another server.
Queues are routinely taking an hour or more on Illidan.US. While we are accustomed to queues throughout the year, it's really getting ridiculous. There are free transfers up, but it has made little change so far. Blizzard was slow to lock the server, and now we have entire guilds from other servers which have transferred (and beaten everything up to Malygos on Heroic difficulty). I'm not sure how I feel about that yet.
As someone mentioned earlier, the Titans story isn't exactly finished... So that could possibly be a continuation to the story, not necessarily reviving old villans. We still haven't entered Uldum in Tanaris...
i played 4 years ago, and now i'm playing again because i have friends that play. i will never play wow if i don't have any friends to play with
Mabey its just the want to see how this saga will finish.
