After much speculation as to her whereabouts in
The War Within
, a recent dialogue option has been added to a tavern conversation during the Hallowfall leveling campaign with Alleria Windrunner about the status of her sister, Vereesa, in the wake of the expansion's opening events.
Warning: War Within Spoilers
Who is Vereesa Windrunner?
Compared to her more striking siblings, Vereesa Windrunner has often played a secondary role in the story of
World of Warcraft
. As the youngest sister of the Windrunner family, her story over the years has been defined by loss time and time again. In the Second War against the Orcish Horde, she lost her parents to the invading orcs and their newfound troll allies, and in an effort to offer him comfort and protection, accidentally caused the death of their brother Lirath as well. In her grief, her eldest sister Alleria decided to leave her duties as Ranger-General in the hands of their sister Sylvanas, in order to hunt down the orcs in distant lands. This eventually led to her disappearance beyond the Dark Portal, where she was missing and presumed dead until the events of
Legion
.
Since those days, Vereesa has gone through a series of victories and tragedies alike. In the wake of the Second War, she was a part of a mission that resulted in the freedom of Alexstrasza from the clutches of Deathwing and the Dragonmaw, met her husband and father of her children, Rhonin, and moved to the mage city of Dalaran where she would later found the Silver Covenant, a militant group of high elves poised in strict opposition to the Horde. Equally, she lost yet more loved ones such as Sylvanas to the Scourge (and later again to the depths of the Maw), as well as Rhonin in the attack on Theramore by Garrosh Hellscream. We last saw Vereesa in
Oribos alongside Alleria
, discussing the complicated legacy of their wayward sister and the losses they have both suffered.

The Destruction of Dalaran
One of the most shocking story revelations of
The War Within
's alpha showcase was the reveal that the long-standing city of Dalaran would come crashing down onto the shores of Khaz Algar at the hands of Xal'atath and her nerubian allies. Dalaran has stood as one of the franchise's most iconic capitols for over two decades, playing a major role in the events of
Warcraft 3
on numerous occasions, before later becoming a capitol city in Northrend during
Wrath of the Lich King
and again on the Broken Isles during the events of
Legion
. Its ruling faction, the Kirin Tor, has played a major role in nearly every expansion of
World of Warcraft
, such as the events of
Mists of Pandaria
where its then-leader Lady Jaina Proudmoore made the choice to rid the city of Horde presence alongside Vereesa and the Silver Covenant in what became known as the Purge of Dalaran.
In the wake of the city's destruction, we are greeted with an introductory questline to the expansion's new continent where we aid the citizens of Dalaran against the encroaching nerubians. It features a large number of characters who have inhabited the city in the past, from mages of the Tirisgarde like Meryl Felstorm and Aethas Sunreaver to members of other order halls such as Ritssyn Flamescowl and the Black Harvest, as well as Marin Noggenfogger and the Uncrowned, a goblin leader who recently got a spotlight in a short story alongside Monte Gazlowe.
This cadre of characters contain a few notable absences, however. Most obviously is the absence of the Council of Six, Dalaran's ruling body of archmages who were recently seen
in the Dark Heart questline
deliberating actions to be taken against Xal'atath. In particular, the storied archmage Khadgar's absence is remarked on by many characters, with his fate left rather deliberately unknown for the moment. The other notable absence is that of Vereesa, made all the more glaring by the presence of Silver Covenant Spellcasters among the survivors, complete with updated outfits to match their Sunreaver counterparts. Not only is Vereesa the leader of these forces in contrast to Aethas, she is a long-standing citizen of the city, having been married to its former leader and raised both her children in the halls of her order's home, the Silver Enclave.

The absence of Vereesa amidst such a momentous event has led many to ask questions as to her whereabouts. Some speculated that she may have been killed in the events of the city's destruction, or that Xal'atath had kidnapped Vereesa to lure Alleria into pursuing her.
Where is Vereesa? Is she safe? Is she alright?
The answer to her whereabouts has been given in a recent addition to a quest in the new zone of Hallowfall. This quest takes place in the wake of our introduction to the zone's villains, the Order of Night, and brings us to a tavern in the middle of the resident Arathi's capitol, the city of Mereldar. It is here that we are afforded a few moments of rest with our main cast, getting to discuss topics such as Anduin's domination or Faerin's memories of her distant home over a few pints.
Among those dialogue options is a conversation with Alleria Windrunner, where we discuss her guilt over what she sees as her failure to protect Dalaran from Xal'atath. In previous alpha builds she merely discussed her losses and her feelings of failure, but in the most recent beta release, a new dialogue option was added to ask her about the safety of her sister Vereesa.
It was my job to stop her.
Not only did I fail, but I failed so catastrophically that a city was destroyed.
I may not have caused Dalaran's destruction, but it happened because of me.
Is Vereesa safe?
She's safe, thank the stars.
She moved away from Dalaran a few years ago. I stop by when I am able to but my work keeps me busy.
Much as I love my sister, she is the least of the things I need to worry about at the moment.

Living Her Best Life
Based on this dialogue, Vereesa moved to an undisclosed location at some point between the events of Battle for Azeroth and the present day. This brings up its own number of questions, such as if she still commands the Silver Covenant from their holdings in Dalaran or the status of her sons now that they are nearly fully grown adults, as well as the simple question of where she
does
live now. Vereesa has always been loyal to the Alliance, and with her role as the most notable leader of the high elves in the faction, she may have simply moved to somewhere like Stormwind or an elven lodge such as Quel'danil in the Hinterlands.
Recent times have shed more light on Quel'thalas, however, with the
recent short story
A Whisper of Warning
detailing its state of seeming neutrality towards members of the Alliance such as Turalyon and Arator (whom she herself raised from infancy). Given her ties to her homeland and the fact that a member of her family already resides there, it may be possible that Vereesa moved to Silvermoon instead. This would certainly be a contentious place for her to reside, due to her hostility towards the blood elves as well as the dark acts she perpetrated against them in the Purge of Dalaran, but with WoW's recent moves into more faction-neutral narratives, the possibility of her mending relations with her kin is not off the table.
This answer might end up unsatisfying to some who had hoped to see Vereesa involved in the aftermath of her home's destruction, but at the very least we know now that she is not in mortal peril or missing in action. Perhaps we may see her in
Midnight
, an expansion that promises to focus heavily on Quel'thalas and "reunite the scattered elven tribes", as Chris Metzen said during its announcement at Blizzcon 2023. For now, however, it seems that Vereesa Windrunner is content to merely live her life elsewhere for the moment, and spare herself the tribulations of plot relevance.
